About Appling, GA - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Appling is an unincorporated community in Georgia, within the Augusta metro area. It was once a city but in 1995 it was unincorporated because it did not meet the qualifications of a city any longer. The town was named for the family of William Appling that had donated the land to Columbia County in the 19th century. At that time, the town was the civil, social, educational, cultural, and spiritual epicenter of Columbia County. Near Appling, were positioned Mt. Carmel Academy as well as the Columbia Institute. The former was run by the renowned Southern educator, Moses Waddell. It’s low-key and quiet atmosphere is the ideal place for people looking for a quiet suburb to escape from Augusta. The beautiful Georgian weather grows the sweetest peaches in the world and provides a seasonal climate that residents thoroughly enjoy.
In the early 19th century, the Georgia Railroad was built. It was decided that to have the trains passing near town would disrupt the proceedings of the court, so the railway ran to the South of the town. But, it is only a quick drive to take a look at the tracks. Today, Columbia County Courthouse Annex and other government buildings are still located there and it is still, technically, the county seat. However, government business is handled in nearby Evans. On a pretty day, take a stroll through town and check out the many historical buildings and fun landmarks. Wildwood Park is located on the shoreline of Clarks Hill Lake and is also a great stop on your sunny day adventures.
Should you be interested in touring the courthouse, they are open from 9 – 4 and the admission is free. They offer self-guided tours, as well. On a cooler day, or in the winter, this would be a great way to pass some time and take a look at some historical and amazing architecture, art and cultural influences. In 1855, the Courthouse in Appling was majorly remodeled. After the renovation was complete in 1856, the building looked much as it still does today. They also managed not to lose the past structure’s integrity and beauty. Despite the extensive project, the shell of the 1809-1812 building was retained. In 1980, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the oldest courthouse in the state and most certainly worth a visit. Appling is also home to the oldest Baptist church in Georgia.
